CALAPAN CITY – A musician in Calapan City has his hands full producing six campaign jingles for candidates, including a congressman, mayors and provincial board members.
“I listen to a sound before bringing it to my instruments,” said Rommel Atienza, 35, who relies on “oido” (playing it by ear) to compose his melody for the jingle. It takes him half a day to complete a jingle, which usually runs for three to five minutes.
The lyrics are provided by Atienza’s clients, but he edits them when needed.
Atienza has a recording booth with instruments for a band, such as an organ, bass guitar, lead guitar and keyboards.
People at Alinco, a store and repair shop for music facilities, said the quality of music produced by Atienza was comparable to those produced in Manila.
Amusement
Atienza considers producing a jingle as fun and is amused to see people dance when his jingle is played around the city.
During the last local elections, he produced a jingle for former Gov. Bart Marasigan (now deceased).
Atienza has been into music since Grade 5. In high school and college, he joined the Young Christian Community’s Choir at the Sto. Niño Parish, which became known in Oriental Mindoro for its singing ministry.
Atienza worked for a computer firm in Manila in 2001 while playing in some shows and making quick visits to his family in Calapan. Now, however, he says he wants to reactivate his musical work.
Last year, he organized six high school students of the Holy Infant Academy in Calapan into a band called d2mazc (an acronym for its members). His 14-year-old son Dominic is on the keyboards.
“I admire him for his dedication to music and his students”, said Shirley Saturay, owner-teacher at the Yamaha School of Music here where Atienza once taught the guitar.
Saturay did not have any second thoughts when her 14-year-old daughter Che-Che was invited by Atienza to be a guitarist-vocalist for the band.
